What was the best thing about studying the Weddell Seals?

Megan from the USA Big Bad Wolves asked the following questions:

What was the best thing about studying the Weddell Seals? What was the best thing about spending all this time in Antartica? What do you plan on doing when you come back?

The best thing about studying Weddell seals? That is an interesting question. I would have to say their unique physiological adaptations. These seals have adapted to

their environment so amazingly that it is awe-inspiring. The adaptations that we see in these seals are not found in other seals like Harbour seals or Stellar Sea Lions which are shallow divers.

Spending time in Antarctica was an amazing experience. Seeing the TransAntarctic Mountains and the glaciers was a highlight for me. Also, when I was on some hikes I would just stop and think about what Scott or Shackleton was thinking when they first saw this snow and ice covered land.

When I come back I have A LOT of teaching and research

ahead of me. I have placed all my teaching load in the winter semester and I have 3 graduate students who need my help to complete their studies. It will be a very busy time!
